GOD & SPIES
Purpose
Our hope is that someone will take
our book and make it into a film!
The Hunt for Red October
The submarine USS Blueback 581 was in the film The Hunt for Red October and is available for filming!
Located at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). https://omsi.edu/submarine.
(Most scenes would be in a submarine.)
Their underwater scenes in The Hunt for Red October were not filmed in water but using
cable-controlled models in a smoke-filled environment, and diver scenes could also be
filmed this way (underwater visibility in Siberia was only five feet).

Script
I have a script for GOD & SPIES (15,400 words of dialogue). A producer would not be
obligated to use it, but it has some ideas on how it could be viewed.
Author Garry and wife, Nancy
GM Matheny was a navy saturation diver on the nuclear submarine USS Halibut SSN 587 and received the Legion of Merit for a special operation. He graduated from Pacific Coast Baptist Bible College in 1979 and has authored four books. Since 1991 he and his wife, Nancy, have served as missionaries in Romania and started three churches which are self-supporting.
The Mount Everest of Spy Missions!
Ivy Bells is considered by some to be the number one spy mission in history. (25 Most Top Secret Military Operations In History - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dWiRtkzaAQ)
Prior to Operation Ivy Bells, when a spy reported back with information on an enemy project, most often there was no way to verify it. But this mission provided us with the conversations of Russian admirals and generals themselves, and that on a daily basis. Giving us a front row seat in their military headquarters listening to all their uncensored calls to Moscow. We learned of their plans in the event of war and the strengths and weaknesses of their equipment and troops.
CIA Release
“NSA’s most sensitive secrets, a project with the code name Ivy Bells … a top-secret
underwater eavesdropping operation by American submarines inside Russian harbors.”
(Declassified 2012/09/25)
“Also reported was the tapping into undersea cables on the Soviet coast, along which the Russians sent military traffic too sensitive to entrust to the airwaves.” (Declassified 2012/02/03)
Spy satellites can take pictures of the Earth’s surface and have the ability to record radio signals
but top-secret information is sent through cables.
Most Dangerous of the Cold War!
According to the History Channel Documentary Blind Man’s Bluff (produced by A&E Networks with Will Lyman and Sherry Sontag), “Ivy Bells remained the most dangerous operation of the Cold War. Every cable tapping mission required personal approval of the president.”
In 1960 American pilot Gary Powers, on a CIA mission, had his U-2 spy plane shot down while flying a reconnaissance mission in the Soviet Union airspace and we could expect no less in their territorial waters. Our sub had destructive charges to scuttle her in the event the Soviets tried to bring us to the surface.
One reason for the high interest in our operation was the audacious nature in which it was done—with not one person risking his neck, but the crews of two nuclear submarine which rendezvoused in Soviet territorial waters.
Spiritual Theme
I did not take an interesting story and sprinkle it with some Bible verses. The Top-Secret part along with the spiritual parts all happened and were “mixed together.” I believe the Lord allowed me to experience these things so Christians would benefit from them and the lost would receive a clear presentation of the gospel.
To honor my dad.
I had made him upset when I wrecked a brand-new car and almost died. So, I joined the navy because he wanted me to. Without realizing it, I began to obey the Bible— “Honour thy father”. This did not save me, but there is a promise attached to this commandment, found in Deuteronomy 5:16, “that it may go well with thee.”
While in the navy I became a navy diver, again to please my dad. He liked watching the TV program Sea Hunt, starring Lloyd Bridges. He even said to me one time, “Garry, we ought to take up diving.” Well he never did, but I did for him, thinking this would make him proud of me and put a smile on his face.
I was saved in the navy.
The first time someone witnessed to me was in the navy. There is a clear presentation of how I went from trusting in good works to trusting Christ for my salvation.
In Siberia I surrendered to serve God.
I wrestled with whether or not I would serve God and about being chosen for the dives. There were twenty-one saturation divers on our sub and only eight of us would be picked to make the dives. But every time I prayed about it, I felt like God was saying to me (I did not hear any voices, only this impression), “What if I don’t let you make these dives, will you still serve me anyway?” I had trusted Jesus Christ with my soul but I still wanted to make the decision on what I was going to do with my life.
I used the navy to win my dad.
My dad and I loved each other and got along great, but when I witnessed to him, he would cuss at me and I couldn’t get a word in edgeways. The day he got saved I told why I went into the navy and became a diver. I had never told him before that I had done these things to make him happy.
